DAVID GOLFS

Home turf

Golf in Nairobi is highland golf. Pack accordingly.

Highland-style golf hole
Thin air, serious grass, early tee times if you want to beat traffic.

If you searched “golf Nairobi” because you have a layover, a conference, or a cousin with a membership, welcome. I am based here. I also leave when the work is elsewhere. This note is the local half.

The ball flies; the rough does not forgive

Altitude can add distance. People hear that and swing out of their shoes. Then they find Kikuyu rough that grabs the hosel and a green that does not hold a flyer. Take the extra club when you are between, but keep the swing ordinary. Wet season and dry season play like two different sports. Ask me which week you are in.

Getting on the course

Clubs have guest policies. Some want a member to sign you in. Some have visitor slots if you call the pro shop like a polite human. Dress: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, golf shoes. Soft spikes. I can help with tee times so you are not negotiating from a taxi in traffic on Ngong Road at 7:40.

Caddies are normal here. Take one if you do not know the routing. Doglegs hide from first-time eyes. I will tell you when a “short hole” is a long club because of how the green sits.

Leave more time than Google Maps promises. The tee sheet does not care about a jam in Westlands.

Sunscreen, water, cash for the caddie if you use the club pool, and a little patience with pace on busy Saturdays. If you want me on the bag, say which club and which morning. If you want me in another country the week after, say that too.
